In the world of gamefowl, few names carry the weight and quiet respect of Mike Ratliff — affectionately known far and wide as “The Chicken Man.”
For decades, starting in the late 1960s from his General Cross Farm in Texas, Mike dedicated his life to the art and science of breeding, raising, and conditioning birds. He wasn’t just a breeder; he was a true master and teacher. Through his famous “School for Beginning Cockers,” he shared his hard-earned knowledge with thousands of students from across the United States and around the globe — passing down generations of wisdom on building strong bloodlines, developing stamina, and understanding the heart of a great bird.
He created the legendary General line, birds celebrated for their consistency, tenacity, and enduring performance. Serious breeders still speak his name with admiration because his methods produced champions that won not just once, but over and over — season after season, year after year.
More than trophies or titles, Mike Ratliff represented a way of life: discipline, patience, deep respect for the birds, and a lifelong commitment to excellence. He turned a passion into a legacy that continues to influence poultry enthusiasts today.
Whether you knew him personally or only through the stories and the “Mike Ratliff Method” that’s still studied and followed, one thing is clear — he left the gamefowl world far richer than he found it. A true Champion of Champions. 🐓
